The company claims to be the world’s second-largest manufacturer with 25 plants worldwide, and produces a lineup of forklifts that includes internal combustion (diesel and LPG) cushion tyre, pneumatic-tyre, three- and four-wheel counterbalanced electric, and single- and double-reach narrow-aisle models. Komatsu’s other construction equipment includes excavators, wheel loaders, dozers, motor graders, dump trucks and articulated dump trucks, mini excavators and wheel loaders, demolition equipment, backhoe loaders, and skid-steer loaders.
Komatsu was established in the early 1920s after the Komatsu Iron Works separated from the Takeuchi Mining Company. The company expanded from 1984 to 1986, establishing a variety of facilities and expanding its dealer network throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Africa. In 1970, for example, the company founded Komatsu America Corp., now a U.S. subsidiary of Komatsu Ltd. based in Rolling Meadows, Illinois. Komatsu America manufactures equipment for the forklift, construction, mining, compact construction, and forestry markets and claims to be the second-largest fully integrated manufacturer and supplier of construction equipment in North America. Komatsu Ltd., which has its UK headquarters in Durham, manufactures construction, mining, utilities, forestry, and industrial machinery, and is part of the Komatsu Group along with roughly 265 other companies.
Komatsu began manufacturing forklifts in 1953. In addition to an extensive dealer network that carries Komatsu forklift parts, the company offers forklift rental services and the exclusive Komtrax remote monitoring system, which comes standard with Komatsu’s FH Series hydrostatic transmission forklifts and enables remote machine monitoring for security, maintenance, and service purposes. Komtrax can also generate periodic reports to operators. In addition to the FH Series, Komatsu produces the BX50 Series of cushion tyre forklifts and AX50, BX50, CX50, and DX50 Series of pneumatic-tyre forklifts. Komatsu also manufactures the AE50, AM50, and BBX50 Series of electric forklifts and an FR50 Series of narrow-aisle forklifts.
