Lift manufacturer Clark Material Handling was founded in 1917 in Buchanan, Michigan. In 1922, the company’s Truclift became the first internal combustion lift truck to use hydraulics instead of gears and linkage to lift a load, Clark says. In 1924, the company fitted an optional tiering attachment to its recent Duat tow tractor to make it the world’s first IC forklift truck, it says. Four years later, the Tructier IC forklift truck did away with the Duat attachment’s lifting cables and chains in favour of hydraulics.

Product Lines

Clark manufactures mast forklifts with pneumatic and cushion tyres ranging from 680- to 8,165-kilogram (1,500- to 18,000-pound) capacities. Power options include LPG, gasoline, dual fuel, diesel, and electric. With such a long production history, used Clark forklifts are available from the mid-1960s with asking prices as low as a few thousand pounds, depending on condition. More recent used models fetch as much as 50,000 pounds or more, but often fall into the 20,000- to 35,000-pound range.

Among the many other types of lifts Clark produces are narrow-aisle stackers, turret trucks, electric riders, three-wheeled tow tractors, reach trucks, order pickers, counterbalanced stand-up lift trucks, pedestrian stackers, working platform vehicles, and powered hand trucks.
